D3 Decimals : Converting to and from Fractions

RELATING DECIMALS AND FRACTIONS
Divide 1 whole into 10 equal parts (tenth)
Example

Decimal point: to separate the whole number part from the fractional part of a
number.
Example:
1.  Express the fraction as a decimal:
        a. 2/10
                2/10 = 1/10 + 1/10 = 0.1 + 0.1 = 0.2
        b. 2 3/10
                2 3/10 = 2 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 0.1 = 2.3

CONVERTING NUMBERS BETWEEN FRACTION TO DECIMAL
Converting Decimals to Fractions
Example
            Convert 0.33 to Fraction
Method
                                   →→
Step1: Divide 0.33 by 1
                        0.33 / 1
Step2: Shift the decimal place for both numerator and denominator
                        0. 3 3  = 33
                        1 0  0    100
Step3: Simplify the answer
                        0.33 = 33/100
Example
            Convert 0.56 to Fraction
Method
Step1: Divide 0.56 by 1
                        0.56 / 1
Step2: Shift the decimal place for both numerator and denominator
                                        →→
                        0. 5 6  = 56
                        1 0  0    100
Step3: Simplify the answer
                        56/100 = 28/50 = 14/25

Converting Fractions to Decimals
Example
            Convert 1/5 to Decimal
Method
Step1: Find a number to multiply with 5(denominator to multiple of 10)
                        5 x 2 = 10
Step2:  Multiply both numerator and denominator by 2
                        1 x 2 =  2
                        5 x 2    10
Step3: Write the numerator and shift Decimal based on zero of 10 multiples
                             2.0 (shift decimal by 1, because 10 – 1 zero)
                        -> 0.2
 Example
            Convert 2/25 to Decimal
Method
Step1: Find a number to multiply with 5(denominator to multiple of 10)
                        25 x 4 = 100
Step2:  Multiply both numerator and denominator by 2
                        2 x 4 =    8
                        25 x 4    100
Step3: Write the numerator and shift Decimal based on zero of 10 multiples
                             8.0 (shift decimal by 1, because 100 – 2 zeros)
                        -> 0.08
                        2/25 = 0.08
Tip
Usually, the denominators given for converting fractions to decimals are:
            2, 4, 5 and 8
Thus, Memorise the following:
            2 x 5 = 10 , 4 x 25 = 100,
            5 x 2 = 10 , 8 x 125 = 1000
