F1 Fractions : Different Types of Fractions

FRACTIONS
What is a fraction?

It is a part of a whole

There are two numbers in a fraction
3  : numerator     = how many of the equal parts are shaded
8  : denominator = how many equal parts the circle is split into
= the ‘whole’, ‘total number of portions’

Tip: d is for denominator, d is for down – at the bottom.

Different value of  fractions

Writing Fractions
Example
            Write the fraction:

Method:
Step1:  Write number starting from 1 on the shaded area until all portions are numbered.
Step2:  Write the fraction with the last shaded number(4), and total portions (7)
                                                4
                                                7

Practice

(1) Write the fraction:

         (7/16)                                 (8/12)

   (2) (a)  What fraction is in ‘BLUE”?
        (b)  What fraction is in ‘ORANGE’?

                 (a) 1/8    (b) 2/8

(3) Shade the followings:

Examples:
 (1) Circle the proper fractions
13    .     7      ,      1
  8          5             3              Answer : 1/3

(2) Circle/s the improper fractions
            9     ,         8          1            Answer : 8/5
            8                5

(3) Circle/s the mixed numbers
            4          7          2
            9          3                      Answer: 2

CONVERT IMPROPER FRACTION TO MIXED NUMBER
Method 2: Long Division
                           7 / 3 = 7 ÷ 3 =

Tip: How to convert the fraction format into a long division format
Example
Convert    11/5 into mixed number

Method
Step1: Change improper fraction to long division

CONVERT MIXED NUMBER TO IMPROPER FRACTION
Example
Convert 1   to an improper fraction

Step 1 Denominator remains the same   /3

Step 2:  Multiply whole number with denominator: 1 x 3 = 3

Step 3: Find numerator = number from step 2 + proper fraction numerator:  3 + 2 = 5
    Answer: 5
                  3

EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS

Equivalent fractions are different fractions that have the same values.

Example
->     1  =  2    =   3   =     4   =   5   =   6      =  7     =   8
         3      6         9        12      15      18         21        24

Finding Equivalent Fractions
Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same value -> different fractions with the same value

Example
       3   =  3x2     =   6                                               20    =   20÷4 = 5
       4       4x2          8                                               24         24÷4     6

LIKE FRACTIONS
