ER1 Ratio Level 5-6 Mathematics Word Problems Questions


1.  Mira was sitting for her driving theory test which consisted of multiple choice questions. By the first hour, she completed 2/5 of the questions. After another half an hour, she managed to answer another 14 questions and the ratio of the number of questions that were answered to those that were unanswered became 3:1. How many questions were there in the driving theory test ?

2.  Daniel and Muthu had a number of cards in the ratio 2 : 7. Muthu and Charles had a number of cards in the ratio 2 : 1. If they had a total of 200 cards altogether, how many more cards did Charles have than Daniel ?

3.  The ratio of the number of 20-cents coins to the number of 50-cent coins is 5 : 3. The ratio of the number of 20-cents coins to the number of $1 coins is 3 : 2. If there are 102 coins altogether, what is the total value of these coins ?

4.  Mr Bala spent $490 of his salary on a DVD player. The remaining money was given to his wife and used for paying the household bills in the ratio 3 : 2. If he used 1/6 of his salary to pay the household bills, how much was his total salary ?

5.  A bag of sweets was distributed to 3 boys, Bala, Krishnan and Hock Kee. Bala received 88 sweets and the remaining sweets were distributed to Krishnan and Hock Kee in the ratio 3 : 1. If Krishnan received 1/5 of the total number of sweets, how many sweets were there in the bag at first ?

6.  A volleyball costs $40. A basketball costs $10 more than the volleyball. School XYZ paid $2100 for a number of volleyballs and basketballs. The ratio of the number of volleyballs to the number of basketballs bought by the school was 5:3.
a.  How many basketballs did the school buy?
b.  How much more money did the school spend on the volleyballs than on the basketballs?

7.  In a basket, the ratio of the number of pears to the number of apples is 3:4. If I add another 12 apples, there would be 1/2 as many pears as apples. How many pears and apples are there in the basket at first ?

8.  In a classroom, when 5 boys left for the washroom, the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls that remained became 1:1. On the other hand, when 5 girls left the classroom, the ratio of the number of boys to the number of girls that remained became 5:3. How many boys and girls were there in the class ?

9.  A box contained a number of 20cent and 50cent coins in the ratio 3:4. When ten 50cent coins were taken out and replaced by 20cent coins, the ratio became 7:5. Find the sum of money in the box at first.

10.  The ratio of Mr Rakesh’s salary to Mr Smith’s salary was 3:4. After they each gave away $2000 to their wives, the new ratio of their salaries became 1:3. What was Mr Rakesh’s salary ?

11.  The ratio of Joanne’s allowance to Elizabeth’s allowance is 1:2. After they each spent $4 on books, Joanne has 2/5 as much money as Elizabeth. Find Joanne’s allowance at first.
