EN2 Numbers : Mathematics Word Problems Questions



Word Problems
1.    Melvin had $240 more than Ramesh at first. After Melvin spent $280 on a toy car, Ramesh had twice as much money as Melvin. Find the amount of money Melvin had at first.

2.    Joshua had 45 more stickers than Melvin at first. After Melvin used 15 of his stickers, Joshua had thrice as many stickers as Melvin in the end. Find number of stickers Joshua had at first.

3.    There were twice as many boys as girls at a party. After 9 girls left the party, there were thrice as many boys as girls who remained behind. How many boys were there at the party?

4.    Aaron had twice as many stickers as Henry at first. After Henry had used up 15 stickers, Aaron had 4 times as many stickers as Henry. How many stickers did Aaron have?

5.    Calvin had thrice as many sweets as Mike. If Mike gave away 12 sweets to his sister, Calvin would have 7 times as many sweet as Mike. How many sweets did Calvin have?

6.    There were twice as many men as women at a concert. After 90 men had left the concert, the number of women in the concert was twice the number of men that remained. How many adults attended the concert?

7.    Mary baked twice as many cookies as Linda at first. After Mary had given away 80 cookies to her Carol, Linda had thrice as many cookies as Mary. How many cookies did Mary bake at first?

8.    Ben made thrice as many egg tarts as Suzy at first. After Ben had made another 30 egg tarts, Ben had 5 times as many egg tarts as Suzy. How many egg tarts did Ben have at first?
     9.    There were thrice as many men as women at a party. After 45 men had left the party, there were twice as many women as men that remained behind. How many men were there at the party at first? 
10.    There were two groups of participants in a contest. There were 15 more participants in Group1 than in Group2. When 3 participants from Group 2 left the group, the number of participants in Group1 was twice the number of participants in Group 2. How many participants were there in Group 1 at first?

11.    In an adult outdoor camp, the number of adults in Campsite A was 64 more than the number of adults in Camp Site B. When 12 adults left Campsite B due to family emergencies, the number of adults in Campsite A was thrice that in Campsite B. Find the number of adults in Campsite A at first.
12.    Janice had 48 more chocolates than Daniel at first. After Daniel ate 12 chocolates, Janice had four times as many chocolates as Daniel. How many chocolates did Janice have at first? 
      13.  Dennis had 120 marbles more than Jean at first. After Dennis gave away 150 marbles to his friend, Calvin.  Jean had thrice as many marbles as Dennis. Find the numbers Dennis had at first.


14.    12 fruits are in a basket. There are thrice as many apples as bananas.  How many apples are there?

15.    John had 12 more pies than Clive at first. After John had eaten 4 pies, he had twice as many pies as Clive in the end. How many pies did Clive have?

16.    Janice had 32 more sweets than Rebecca as first. After Rebecca had eaten 14 of his sweets, Janice had thrice as many sweets as Rebecca. How many sweets did Janice have at first?
17.    Mr. Tan had $800 more than Mr Krishnan at first. After Mr. Krishnan had spent $340, Mr. Tan had 5 times as much money as Mr. Krishnan. Find the amount of money Mr. Tan had at first.


18.    There were twice as many men as women at a party. After 15 women had left the party, the number of men in the party was thrice the number of the remaining women. How many adults attended this party?
