N1-G123 Rate and Speed

Speed = Total Distance / Total time taken

Constant speed = The speed remains the same

Average rate:  Total change in one value divided by total change in another value

4.2  Conversion of units (km/h - m/s)

Common Unit of Measure

      (a) Distance in km, time in hour and speed in km/h

      (b) Distance in m, time in second, speed in m/s

Conversion

      Eg: Convert 18 km/h to m/s

                  18km = 6000m, 1h = 3600 s

                  18 km/h = 5000m/3600s = 5 m/s

Time

1 hour (h) = 60 min (m)

1 min = 60 seconds (s)

1hour = 60 x 60 = 3600 s

1 s =   1/60 x 1/60   = 1/3600  h

            1 s = 1/3600 h

            1 h = 3600 s

            0.5 or ½ hr = 30 mins
